P01-A-C The Human Problem in Schools

Between 1934 and 1939 Marion Milner conducted research into the education system of the Girls Public Day School Trust. This work resulted in the book The Human Problem in Schools, (1938).

The documents include reviews; notes; correspondence commenting on the work.

The documents also include material directly related to Milner’s work at various schools across the Trust, including Ipswich, Streatham Hill, Oxford, Putney High School, Wimbledon, Croydon, Portsmouth. They comprise general reports, reports on pupils and intelligence test results.

P01-A-E The Hands of the Living God

This is Marion Milner's best-known work on psychoanalysis. It relates to her lengthy treatment of a psychotic patient and the insights she gained into her own mind.

Analysis began in 1943 when the woman was 23, at request of D W Winnicott. It lasted 20 years and Milner remained a close confidant.

The documents include preparatory materials for the book; patient notes; letters from the patient; letters about the patient; reviews.

P01-B-A Psychology lectures

Following her university degree, Marion Milner worked for the National Institute of Industrial Psychology. Then, after the birth of son in 1932, she took part-time work as lecturer in psychology for the Workers’ Education Association, which included a university tutorial class. The documents in this series arise from these activities and subsequent lectures in psychology.

They are mostly typed lecture notes but there are 2 sylabuses (catalogued in P01/B/A/01-02).

These documents arise from Marion Milner’s contribution as programme consultant to a course for the Open University entitled Art and Environment. One of the organisers was Christopher Crickmay. He conducted a television interview with Milner as part of the course.

P01-C Rockefeller Scholarship

Marion Milner spent two years in America, 1927 to 1929. She had become interested in the work of Elton Mayo and managed to secure a Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial scholarship to spend the Winter of 1927/1928 attending Mayo's seminars in Boston. During the rest of her 2 year scholarship, she observed Mayo's work on the Hawthorne experiment in Chicago and travelled to various places across the country. She was accompanied by her husband, Dennis Milner, who was writing plays at the time.

The documents comprise letters sent to family; photographs; notes.

Papers arising from Milner's work with or about other people, particularly psychoanalysts and artists. The papers include: typescripts and published articles, many annotated by Milner; letters and correspondence; artworks (usually copies); and handwritten notes by Milner. Correspondence and notes are usually not extensive, unless indicated.

Documents are often annotated by Milner and frequently revisited at a later date.

The correspondence is arranged as follows; P01-D-A to P01-D-D contain files for named correspondents where the material is substantial or significant. The remaining correspondence is arranged alphabetically in P01-D-E. P01-D-F is a small sub-series containing miscellaneous correspondence and colleague related papers. These comprise a file of 'Fan Mail' kept together by Marion Milner; several files of postcards; 1 file of unidentified papers/part papers.

Nina Marion Blackett was born in Kensington in 1900, the daughter of Arthur Stuart Blackett and Caroline Frances Maynard. Her brother was Patrick M S Blackett (1897-1974) the eminent physicist. She also a sister Winifred (1895-1969) who married George Burger.
Marion Blackett married Dennis Milner in 1927. They had one son.
